Solo Female Travellers AVOID STAYING HERE!

1/5

·

Trveller191 on Apr 18, 2024

As a solo female traveller who has stayed at this hostel multiple times without issue, I regret to say my latest experience was deeply unsettling. I strongly advise solo female travellers, particularly those visiting during the off-peak season, to consider alternative hostels. During this period, the hostel appears to house older men, some of whom displayed inappropriate and disturbing behaviour. On one occasion, I entered my room to find a man inappropriately touching himself by the window (but surprisingly, he was the least problematic). Another man repeatedly invaded my privacy by opening my curtains whenever he felt like it, demanding I take his 'gifts' (which were tuna cans and half opened chocolates), he also was preaching super controversial patriarchal things. Saying women were in the world to serve men, and women were nothing without husbands. He clearly had no respect for women, and I could feel it every time he spoke. One man in the room disagreed with one thing he said (and in a pretty nice way) and he went off on a spiral, literally walking in circles around his bed muttering unsettling phrases like "use words, not violence." He even physically grabbed me as I attempted to leave the room once, and demanded that I answer his questions about religion and politics. After reporting these incidents, the reception staff, who were very supportive, moved me and another female guest to a different room and removed him from the hostel. Unfortunately, the problems continued. A new male roommate frequently yelled and swore loudly in the mornings. Although initially non-threatening, his behavior escalated dramatically one night when he verbally assaulted a woman in our room for coughing at 3 a.m., causing me immense fear. When I sought to change rooms again, the male receptionist informed me that I would have to pay £200 for another move, offering only a private room at a significant extra cost. Feeling unsafe, I spent the night in the bar area, desperately searching for other accommodations. Ultimately, the morning staff were more accommodating, moving me to an all-female dorm at no extra cost and apologising for my experiences. Despite this, I felt compelled to leave before my next scheduled stay in a mixed dorm, forfeiting a non-refundable booking. While I lost my money, prioritising my safety was my main concern. While the hostel has (some) friendly staff and was previously a good option, recent experiences of negligence towards guest safety during off-peak travel times have made it necessary for me to leave this review and I highly recommend that any solo female travellers stay elsewhere.

Great location, staff and value for money

Great place to stay, 5 mins walk from our visit to Festival Theatre. Easy walk from Princes Street. Staff were very friendly and helpful, especially Mathew at reception. We had a private room for two, was a double with single bunk above. Perfect size room for one night and smashing en suite shower room. Our room was newly refurbished and there still some of that going on but it didn’t affect our stay in any way, even the workmen were polite. Breakfast was buffet style and aims at pleasing a variety of tastes and diets. We ate our fill and were happy with what we paid, especially in the capital. All in we had a great stay and would 100% recommend. We will be back!

Just don't order food

The hostel was nice and clean, nothing special and nothing horrible. The twin room we were in didn't have loads of space and the shower was very tight. The lockers weren't working on arrival. The location is very good, right in the heart of the old town. One thing I did find strange was that, rather than a cash deposit, we were required to surrender photo ID if we wanted to rent a hair dryer. This was a first for me, and a passport for a little plastic hair dryer seems steep. Unfortunately, the bar downstairs really let's this place down. On our second night I ordered the bacon and cheese burger and paid extra for a slice of haggis in it. When the burger came the haggis was there but the bacon and cheese were absent. The waitress was very apologetic and offered to bring it back to the kitchen. After a lengthy wait, the burger came back out. This time it had bacon but the haggis had disappeared, and the cheese was still missing. Chips were stone cold. The bar was not busy either, I am astounded at how any professional cook could mess this up. To their credit, I was given a cash refund on the spot, but I would have been much happier eating elsewhere. If you do decide to eat in the bar be warned that there are often items unavailable, and you may have to bring your own cheese.

My boyfriend and I stayed in the "twin room" for 3 nights. The floor and the walls was very dirty, and with old candy under one of the beds - it wasn't very pleasant. However the bathroom was very good and clean compared to the rest of the room! It would have made a big difference for our stay if the room had just been properly cleaned. We had a thin window that faced down to the common area outside, and there was so much noise during the night + it was pretty cold. Despite earplugs we were woken up every night, from both the people outside but also from drunk people in the hallway - but I guess that's what you can expect from a hostel. The breakfast was pretty decent. However I found it pretty unhygienic that there were no hand sanitizer to be found anywhere near the food, and I never had the impression that there was any kind of staff watching over the buffet. The people in the reception was always very nice and helpful. I guess you can say that you get what you pay for, but despite it being a cheap accommodation I still think that the rooms should be clean upon arrival.

Amazing location, great wifi. Friendly reception staff especially Lilly. We had a very enjoyable stay. Comfy beds, clean bedding. Private room for 3 people with en-suite. Room was warm and a little noisy but we had read this from reviews previously so were prepared and brought earplugs/headphones. Luggae room available or secure lockers that you can also pay for if you would prefer.
